Dr Jo Maloney is the Founder and CEO of EDGE Ecosystem, Climate LinkUP, and the QUIN Institute for Sustainable Executive Education. With over 30 years of international experience in environmental science, innovation, and leadership, Jo has held senior positions across scientific research and development, sustainable policy, environmental management, and academia. In 2020–2021, she authored the Welsh Government’s Strategic Environmental Assessment for Flood Risk and Coastal Erosion and the Marine Resilience Evidence Report for Wales Report, informing national climate and environmental policy.
Jo’s career spans global environmental monitoring and R&D across terrestrial and coastal ecosystems, from land to sea at catchment and landscape scales. She has led habitat mapping, biodiversity monitoring, and strategic environmental assessments (SEA), and developed innovative, internationally published infrared sensor technology for real-time environmental monitoring. She has implemented advanced tools for environmental and climate monitoring, including bioacoustic systems, and pioneered near-infrared optical density sensors to optimise and control microalgae bioproduction in climate-controlled conditions, contributing to sustainable fisheries and circular economy solutions. Jo also contributed to geochemical data collection and mapping for the British Geological Survey’s G-BASE project in North Wales and Northwest England, integrating complex datasets into actionable environmental intelligence.
Dr Maloney has been commended as a ‘Top Lecturer’ in an Australian press release after returning to Wales, where she developed and delivered postgraduate courses in environmental forensics, research methods, environmental monitoring, and data analysis and modelling. She has authored government environmental and climate evidence reports with national recommendations and published in leading high-impact scientific journals, providing actionable insights for biodiversity, ecosystem resilience, and climate adaptation.
With extensive expertise in innovation, technology, environmental monitoring, biodiversity, and climate change, Jo bridges the gap between science, education, communities, and industry. She drives global climate and sustainability initiatives that safeguard the natural environment and advance net-zero goals. Jo’s pioneering approach and strategic leadership drive the creation of scalable, evidence-based environmental innovations that deliver measurable ecological, societal, and economic impact – creating meaningful change for a more sustainable future.
