Dr Jo Maloney is the Founder and CEO of EDGE Ecosystem, EDGE Ecologic CIC, Climate LinkUP, and the QUIN Institute. A European Commission Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellow and Royal Society of London Fellow, Jo brings over 35 years of international leadership in strategic environmental science and statutory policy. In 2020–2021, she authored the Welsh Government’s Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) Environment Report for Flood Risk and the Marine Resilience Evidence Report for Wales, establishing the national benchmarks required for modern environmental compliance.
Jo’s career began in Wales (Zoology with Geology BSc, Aberystwyth), followed by a PhD in Marine Sciences, and has since spanned lifelong R&D across terrestrial, aquatic, coastal and deep sea ecosystems in the UK, Norway and Australia. Her 35-year global expertise focuses on Ecosystem-Level Structure and Function — specifically how environmental structural architecture and functional dynamics respond to anthropogenic stressors, including the transport and impact modelling of environmental pollutants, and impacts of global climate shifts.
A leader in forensic-grade data science, Jo has implemented advanced bioacoustic and near-infrared optical systems to quantify ecosystem resilience, with published articles in leading international journals. Her contributions to the British Geological Survey’s G-BASE project for North Wales and northern England in the 1990s involved development of multi-layered biogeochemical maps that remain a standard for environmental intelligence across the UK today.
Commended as a ‘Top Lecturer‘ for her work in environmental forensics and modelling, Jo is dedicated to bridging the critical gap between complex science, statutory policy, and industry. Under her direction, EDGE Ecosystem and EDGE Ecologic CIC provide the high-level intelligence layer required for advanced landscape management. By integrating place-based community engagement with environmental forensic-grade monitoring, Jo is establishing a new national standard for the preservation of our natural assets and cultural heritage.
Beyond the data, Jo is a creative storyteller who personally designs and produces the media for her initiatives—including the Climate LinkUP short film, Planet Earth, Our Home supported by the BBC and Sir David Attenborough. By blending scientific expertise with creative direction, graphic design and advanced coding, she works to bridge the gap between research, education, and industry to support meaningful nature recovery.
Bringing together a lifetime of scientific expertise with a hands-on approach to technical design, Dr Jo Maloney remains dedicated to advancing ecosystem resilience and nature-positive outcomes worldwide.
